Let's remember that the ultra deep dark red state that devised Trump's game plan was the Heritage Society, which worked their assess off to get Trump elected so that he could implement the infamous "Project 2025", which was designed to convert our democracy into a fascist state with a malleable charismatic buffoon as its front.
This all appealed to a rich playboy, con artist, lecher and fraudster whose claim to fame was playing himself as the blowhard egotistical star of a tv sitcom which promoted him as the man who wrote "The Art of the Deal", when , in fact, it was entirely ghostwritten for him. What attracted the producers the most was his loud-mouth insults, bragging and posturing that they knew would make their tv audience see him as a clown in a monkey-suit - a clear money maker for the studio and center of attention for him.
It's hard to separate the twisted mind of a deranged egotist and the origins of the hatred and bigotry he spouted. Let's remember that from Day 1 in his first administration when he counted 1 million spectators admiring him during his inauguration that his office staff confided in the press that his mind generated "alternate truths" and "alternate facts" to maintain his mental equilibrium. And, of course, we heard Rudolf Giuliani adopt Trump's mentality by claiming that "The truth is not the truth."
Trump can only live in a world where he is worshipped by his cult following and where anyone who opposes him or his view of the world is "scum" or, if they're immigrants, "vermin".
As evidence of all of this, let's not forget that Trump publicly declared that he would not consider anyone to join his administration who refused to acknowledge "the Big Lie", that he won the 2020 election.
The Heritage Foundation easily discovered how they could manipulate Trump's sick mind and his cult following to roll out their agenda.
Ejecting all non-believers from federal employment fit perfectly into both Trump's psyche and the Heritage Society's strategy, under the guise of cost cutting, to rid the government of non-believers so that only those whose daily goal is to promote an authoritarian state will remain in employment. And let's remember Trump's and Musk's proposal to require current federal employees to write weekly essays on how they are promoting the approved agenda and goals of Trump's administration.
And as a favor to Trump, the deep red state went all out to convince the Republican controlled legislature of Oklahoma to enact legislation, that was subsequently signed by the governor, to require all schools within the state to teach a course which casts doubt on the legitimacy of Biden's 2020 election by claiming serious discrepancies (all of which were rejected by over 80 courts throughout the U.S.). So we should not be surprised if the U.S. Department of Education, before they are totally disbanded by Trump, officially requests that he issue one of his now famous "Executive Orders" declaring that such legislation be implemented in all states.
So to return to the original thesis, I believe that the gutting of our civil service is an integral part of a much broader plan to upend our democracy in favor of the institution of an oppressively authoritarian regime that is designed to control our every action and thought

That black and blue on his right eye is suspicious...that he was in charge of our country while he was out of his mind on drugs is a testament to #47's incompetence. It appears capturing what is real and true, including a realistic assessment of probable consequences for our futures, is not the Times’ mission if Trump billionaires among the readership might get mad.
I am so glad Olga and others are hammering this reality home. One thing I keep wishing for in these pieces is specific examples, born of experience, of exactly how this data compilation might be used against an ordinary citizen who poses no threat to the autocracy. I think more people would take these warnings seriously if they could hear specific stories--from existing or previous autocracies--of how even folks who lack a public profile are surveilled and controlled.
